17 Bridges is a major motion picture that is set in New York City, but it is being filmed on location in Philadelphia. Directed by Brian Kirk, 17 Bridges stars Chadwick Boseman, Sienna Miller, J.K. Simmons, Taylor Kitsch, and Stephan James.
According to IMDB, 17 Bridges is about “a disgraced detective (Boseman) in the NYPD who is given a shot at redemption. Thrust into a citywide manhunt for a cop killer, he begins to undercover a massive conspiracy that links his fellow cops to a criminal empire and must decide who he is hunting and who is actually hunting him. During the manhunt, Manhattan is completely locked down for the first time in its history - no exit or entry to the island including all 17 bridges.”
17 Bridges has been filmed all over Philly including in the Rittenhouse Square area, 20th & Market Streets, Tinto, Old City (near where The Constitutional Walking Tour and Spirits of ’76 Ghost Tour operate), the Loft District (Bounded by Spring Garden to the South, Broad Street to the West, 6th Street to the East and Spring Garden to the North), and Chinatown. In the movie, Tinto's name has been changed to Mosto.
Boseman is famous for his role as Black Panther in the recent Marvel Studios movies. Boseman has also portrayed a number of historical figures in biographical roles including Jackie Robinson in the movie 42 and James Brown in Get on Up. As history lovers at The Constitutional Walking Tour, our favorite Chadwick Boseman role was his portrayal of Thurgood Marshall, civil rights lawyer and the first African American Supreme Court Justice in the movie entitled Marshall.
Various vehicles from New York have been seen around Philly including NYPD cars, a NYC Fire Department truck, and New York City Taxis.
Tinto, located at 114 S. 20th Street (near 20th & Sansom Streets), is a tapas restaurant inspired by Basque Country in Northern Spain, and it has been one of the central filming locations. Tinto is closed to the public through at least October 31, 2018, while filming is going on. From the sign posted outside Tinto, it appears that Tinto is also serving at the Green Room.
Shake Shack and Capogiro, catty-corner from one another at 20th & Sansom Streets, have been boarded up, complete with graffiti, and Shake Shack also has been retrofitted with scaffolding all around it, simulating a construction site.
To give it an authentic look as a New York City construction site, Shack Shack also has a New York City issued Work Permit posted on it for a Mixed Use Residential complex.
Graffiti seems to be an artistic theme of 17 Bridges, and there has been a lot of temporary new graffiti created for the filming of the movie around 20th & Sansom Streets.
17 Bridges is scheduled for release in theaters nationwide in July 2019.
