First Reading of The Declaration of Independence in Boston, Old State House, Boston, July 18, 1776

On July 18, 2020, we celebrate the 244th anniversary of the first reading of The Declaration of Independence in Boston at the Old State House which is a popular site along the Freedom Trail.

Back in 1776, Bostonians gathered under the balcony of the Old State House to hear the brave and revolutionary words of The Declaration of Independence for the first time.

By way of background, it took nearly two weeks for The Declaration of Independence to travel from Philadelphia to Boston. In Philadelphia, The Declaration of Independence was drafted by Thomas Jefferson at the Declaration House, and The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, America’s birthday, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, just a couple of blocks from the Declaration House.
