As a nation that has shaped its ethics, policies, and principles on the idea of freedom, it is essential to think about the importance of living in a place where one is able to speak their mind and truth without being punished or prosecuted. While all freedoms are important, the idea of the freedom to speak is something that should be noticed and respected. Adopted in 1791, freedom of speech was a part of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, stating that congress shall make no law “bridging the freedom of speech”. The idea that American citizens get to speak out against the government highlights not only America’s freedoms, but also the government as a whole. It shows the true meaning of American democracy and how American citizens play a role in the decision making of the country. Being able to speak freely without being punished is so essential for a country to thrive because if no one could express their opinion the country could never fix its wrong-doings and would become a system where the voices of the people are not heard. If freedom of speech was not established, our country would not be able to progress with time and change in any way. The United States has proved that by giving its citizens the freedom to speak it can succeed into a place where Americans feel proud to be a citizen and to have a say in the policies which shape their country. Personally, I feel proud to live in a place where I can speak out on anything whether I agree or disagree without feeling ashamed or afraid. Overall while all freedoms are essential to what America is, freedom of speech is essential to the American people, government, and way of life.
